The Assemblies of God is responding with assistance and compassion to the victims of the recent tornadoes in Joplin, Mo., and other areas of the Midwest. The destruction and loss of life is staggering.

Our partner in compassion is Convoy of Hope and they have been on the ground there since early Monday getting food and supplies to those in need. Already they have distributed tens of thousands of pounds of food, water, and supplies. The national office sent some of our heavy equipment and experienced staff to help move rubble and clear areas. Over 8,000 buildings in the town were destroyed or damaged. Entire neighborhoods were wiped out. The infrastructure of the city is largely gone.

A nine-year-old boy from one of our churches in Galena, Kansas, was among those killed. More than 125 are confirmed dead with hundreds still missing.

I have done a video clip outlining how our Fellowship can help in this disaster. You may download this video from ag.org. There is also a button on the site where people can donate to the relief efforts.

Superintendent, please encourage your churches to first of all pray those who have suffered loss of loved ones and homes. Then invite them to give to Convoy of Hope as they continue to minister compassion to this area.

I will go to Joplin on Friday with Hal Donaldson to visit with some of our people and pastors. Faith Assembly in Joplin was destroyed and Second Assembly and Cathedral Assembly were both damaged. We can rebuild these buildings, but we cannot replace the lives of people. Our pastors there face a daunting task in bringing the love and comfort of God in the midst of this tragedy and they need God’s help. Please pray for them that God will minister His strength and peace to them as they minister to others.
